On The Label is a series where we place the spotlight on various local fashion labels through a brief and digestible introduction. This week, it's LAISON by Aurelia Santoso, a label that plays up the versatility of today's modern woman.

LAISON, launched in 2014 by designer Aurelia Santoso along with three of her friends, seek to dress modern women of today with pieces that personify elegance and sophistication without forgoing comfort.

Santoso, who had experience working with the famed London-based designer, Mary Katrantzou, often infused her collections with tailoring and relaxed, yet structured, silhouette. The graduate of Otis College of Arts & Design and Singapore’s Raffles Design Institute also strives to reflect a story in each piece she designs, drawing her inspirations from books, music and fine arts.

To wit, the label’s 2016 Spring-Summer collection titled “Memento” is themed around the historical tragedy that befalls Pompeii in 79 A.D., known widely as the forgotten city that lay buried for 1500 years after the catastrophic volcanic eruption. In remembrance of the catastrophe, Santoso employed the imperfection of the tiles of Pompeii in prints, alongside beads with cracked textures, and applied them on tailored pieces like white oversized top and strapless dress.

From androgynous menswear-inspired pieces to feminine dresses that you can take from a business meeting during the day to a night out in town, LAISON plays up the versatility of today’s modern woman.
