The team behind Dan’s Burgers returns to Dharmawangsa with Dan’s Diner, a new concept inspired by the humble diners the founders encountered during a month-long trip across New York City and Los Angeles. While it carries the same bold red “Dan’s” signage, the diner is not a sequel but a story of its own. “At Dan’s Burgers, the idea is that people can stop by and move on,” says co-founder Danu Putranto. “The diner is different. You can still come for a quick meal, but it’s also a place to hang out with friends, go on a date, or bring the family.”
That spirit is reflected in the high-backed booths and square tables, which invite diners to linger over American comforts like pancakes, waffles and beef bacon. The room carries the easygoing charm of a neighbourhood diner in the United States, with subtle touches that keep it distinctly Dan’s.
The inspiration gathered during the founders’ travels is reflected most clearly throughout the menu. Rather than adjusting the recipes to suit Jakarta’s palate, the diner presents its dishes much as they would be served in the United States. The approach comes through clearly in the all-day breakfast items, where hearty plates make just as much sense for lunch or dinner as they do in the morning. Take the Classic Breakfast, for instance, which lets diners choose between beef bacon or sausage, paired with eggs cooked any style and hash browns, alongside toast with strawberry or blueberry jam.
The breakfast menu continues with combinations that have become increasingly common on modern diner menus. The Chicken and Waffles, for instance, pairs crisp waffles with hot Nashville-style chicken tenders, served with maple syrup for a sweet contrast. Just as the name suggests, the syrup also appears in the Pancakes with Maple Butter, served with a choice of blueberry, banana, walnut or chocolate chunk. Made with buttermilk, the pancakes arrive fluffy and light, striking the kind of balance that makes them suitable at any hour of the day.
While the dishes transport diners through flavour, the setting completes the feeling of stepping into a classic American diner. Even those who have never been to the diners in America will be hit with an oddly familiar feeling, like a scene lifted from a Hollywood film or sitcom. Pendant lamps hang above a retro-style menu board listing diner staples, with a classic Coca-Cola sign at its centre. At the counter, lone guests sit shoulder to shoulder on chrome stools, watching the staff at work as cups of coffee are topped up. Across from the counter, the seats at the booths host livelier conversations that continue long after the last bite.
While American diner fare may not be something Jakarta diners encounter every day, the steady flow of visitors suggests a growing familiarity. International menus slip easily into the city’s routine, with guests arriving just as they are — some in wrinkled shirts on a lunch break, others in casual outfits suited for the heat. It captures what a diner can be: simple, unpretentious, and made for settling in at any time during the day. At Dan’s Diner, where different crowds converge, settling in for waffles or milkshakes can feel just as fitting after a long day as it would at the start of one.
