Originally from Bali, the bistro Little Frenchie, recognisable by its playful French bulldog mascot, has now made its way to Jakarta. Tucked into a quieter pocket of Senopati, the new outpost carries the charm of its Pererenan original without feeling like a transplanted copy.
Step inside and the cues are immediate. Bentwood chairs line the tables, globe pendant lights hover above, and glassware etched with a cheerful Bon appétit! sits waiting for the first order. The restaurant’s French bulldog mascot appears in small illustrations around the room, lending the space a wink of personality that softens the otherwise classic café setting.
Like its Bali counterpart, Little Frenchie leans into the easy pleasures of French-style dining. The menu moves comfortably from breakfast to dinner, offering familiar bistro staples alongside a few dishes created specifically for the Jakarta branch. More importantly, it encourages the kind of meal that stretches slowly, regardless of the occasion.
That spirit becomes clear once the first dishes land on the table. The Mushroom Parfait, exclusive to Jakarta, arrives as a mound of creamy mushroom pâté meant to be spread thickly across toasted bread. It’s the sort of starter that naturally pulls diners closer together, as hands reach across the table for another slice.
The Salade de Betteraves follows with a lighter touch. Roasted beetroots and baby carrots peek through crisp watercress, the sweetness of the vegetables balanced by the salad’s fresh bite. It’s the kind of dish that keeps the conversation flowing until the mains arrive and attention shifts back to the plates.
Vegetables take the spotlight in Ratatouille, another Jakarta-exclusive addition. Courgette and aubergine are layered carefully with romesco sauce and garlic cream, producing a dish that feels both rustic and quietly indulgent.
For something heartier, the Whole Coquelet delivers a josper-grilled spring chicken served with silky pomme purée. The skin carries a gentle char, and each cut of the knife reveals tender meat beneath: a simple combination executed with quiet confidence.
By day, the sunroom at the front of the restaurant becomes Little Frenchie’s most inviting corner. Sunlight pours through the glass panels and settles across tables scattered with coffee cups and shared plates, making it an easy place to stretch a quick brunch into a longer afternoon.
As evening settles in, the centre of gravity shifts deeper into the restaurant. The main dining room resembles a cottage tucked within the city, with globe pendant lights hanging overhead like small glowing moons. Conversations ripple across nearby tables while servers move between them.
Even for those who have never visited the original in Bali, this Jakarta outpost feels like a natural continuation of something already well built.
And while diners here may not arrive from the beaches of Pererenan or from cycling through the island’s rice fields, Little Frenchie offers its own version of slowing down in Jakarta, in the form of a long meal shared with the right company, before drifting out into the night with a satisfied appetite.
