Taste of Travel: Yogyakarta

Taste of Travel is a special collaboration between Booking.com and Manual Jakarta, where we highlight five must-visit coffee shops in the city of Bandung, Surabaya and Yogyakarta for the time-strapped travellers. Last but not least is Yogyakarta, a city where its age-old cultural heritage mingles with the new.

As the only region in Indonesia that is still ruled by a monarchy, Yogyakarta’s charm lies in its rich history. But ancient structures, nasi gudeg and batik aren’t the only things that make this city special. For years, Yogyakarta has attracted individuals like entrepreneurs and artists who have been overhauling the city with a new take on lifestyle establishments that still reflect the laid-back charm of the city. This is where you can find the old mixing with the new. Case in point, a day in Yogyakarta can be spent exploring the famous Candi Prambanan and sipping a cup of iced latte in a specialty coffee shop. No longer living under the shadow of Bali, Yogyakarta has confidently established itself as one of the top destinations in the country, be it for a short getaway or long holiday.

LAJU

Being pressed for time is a common gripe when you’re travelling. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time, does it? And worst, no one likes to be rushed when it comes to coffee. But what if it is on-the-go?

Hidden away in a quiet neighbourhood, LAJU is exactly the coffee shop made for that. With its drive-thru concept that focuses on being swift, it is unsurprising that the coffee served here is based on the uncomplicated Es Kopi (traditional iced coffee). Even so, it’s normal for first-timers to mull over which Es Kopi to go for. For that, you can safely bet on either Ais Kopi Susu Gula Alpen (with salted caramel) or Ais Kopi Susu Terbaik (with vanilla base).

The idea of being swift as an arrow is also reflected in its bold logo in red, where it bears an amusing resemblance to DHL Express. Given its location nearby Gajah Mada University and the affordable price, students are a common sight here. Ironically, it’s easy to be seduced by LAJU’s casual and laid-back vibe that once here, you’ll be inclined to stay longer than anticipated.

Klinik Kopi

Klinik Kopi is just what you suspect it might be based on the name itself. Customers arrive at the veranda and its owner slash sole barista, Mas Pepeng peeks out from the space where he operates in and passes you a number. Once your turn is up, you proceed to take off your shoes and enter a compact room fitted with a coffee bar as if you’re a personal guest to his home.

Here, only filter coffee is served and you take your pick from a variety of single-origin coffee sourced within Indonesia. If all of that feels intimidating, especially if you’re new to coffee, don’t be. The convivial nature of Mas Pepeng, much like a conversational doctor, immediately sets you at ease as he works around your preferences.

But it’s not yet over once you got your “prescribed” coffee. Patrons usually hang around by the lesehan (floor seating) area and finish up their coffee in leisure. As such, the coffee experience is heightened thanks to the bespoke quality minus the pretentiousness that easily got you thinking of your next visit for that personalised fix of caffeine at Klinik Kopi.

Ruang Seduh

Ruang Seduh needs no introduction for coffee enthusiasts who are well acquainted with its flagship in Jakarta. But even if you know what to expect from Ruang Seduh, it’s still worth to make a trip down to this particular branch in Yogyakarta.

Since patrons are welcome to try their hand at making their own cup of joe in Ruang Seduh, there’s no reason not to do it. Unless you’re the type that’s cranky before caffeine, then best leave it to the friendly barista.

With its prime location on Tirtodipuran Street, Ruang Seduh is just a short distance away from a handful of popular lodgings, like Greenhost Boutique Hotel and ViaVia guesthouse, as well as some of the famous F&B establishments, among them include gelateria Il Tempo Del Gelato and Mediterranea Restaurant. Sometimes you’ll find the same face in Ruang Seduh appearing in the latter after their coffee, or vice versa.

Tekoff

One glance at Tekoff and it’s obvious that patrons of this coffee shop return regularly for its easy and homey vibe. The latter is prominent because Tekoff itself is converted from the ground floor of a house that’s located within a lively residential area.

The best spot is its outdoor area, where you can plonk yourself on a beanbag and plan the rest of your itinerary. If you’re here early in the morning, you might just enjoy the entire space for yourself with the company of students’ laughter from the nearby school.

Tekoff works best when you have an extra time to kill. But if you have to leave early, stretch that experience and make your way to the main road on foot to enjoy the banal scene of Yogyakarta’s residential area.

Ekologi

For those who are accustomed to visiting coffee shops to unwind, Ekologi may come as a shock. Not that the mood is far from being laid-back, it’s just that almost all of the patrons of Ekologi are there for a specific reason: to work.

Doubling up as coworking space, the spacious interior of Ekologi also provides plenty of area for one to pick their spot, whether it’s in the corner or smacked in the middle of the room. But if you’re inclined to soak up Vitamin D while enjoying your coffee, then head to its striking outdoor area at the back, where it’s filled with greeneries.

Despite the serious crowd, the atmosphere in Ekologi remains relaxed and most discussions are done in a hushed manner. Such vibe might even prompt you to reply a couple of work emails during your break in Yogyakarta.
