The city of Jakarta can be a merciless habitat for its inhabitants. Like a moth attracted to the light, the city has seen countless armies of hopeful dream seekers march their way into its embrace, only to be disenchanted and have their aspirations shattered and strewn all over the city like hollow shells.
Directed by noted Indonesian Director, Lucky Kuswandi, Selamat Pagi, Malam (In The Absence Of The Sun) tells a story of three women from different backgrounds over a night in the city of Jakarta – Gia (Adinia Wirasti) returned to Jakarta from New York only to feel like a foreigner in the very own city she was born in and decided to meet up with her ex-soulmate Naomi (Marissa Anita) for a night out in the city; Indri (Ina Panggabean), a lowly gym employee, wishes to climb up the social status and leave her struggling days behind. She encounters Faisal (Trisa Triandesa), the son of a humble food peddler, after a disastrous blind date with a rich man; Ci Surya (Dayu Wijanto) is left grief-stricken after the death of her husband but is dealt with another blow after discovering her husband’s infidelity with a bar singer, Sofia (Dira Sugandi).
The lives of these three women differ greatly from one another, but the city of Jakarta spins an invisible thread that links them together through their pain, laughter and hope. It goes on to show that where you are can do a lot to shape who you are. The city can be a harsh and unforgiving environment, where everyone, one way or another, ends up as a victim. But just as the city may tear one down, it also builds them back up.
