Sejauh Mata Memandang’s latest exhibition entitled ‘Jakarta Kita’ showcases works of art of local craftswomen in Jakarta through the medium of batik and handcrafted products.

Textile label Sejauh Mata Memandang is unveiling its latest collection through an event and exhibition entitled ‘Jakarta Kita’ at Jakarta Creative Hub, Central Jakarta. Collaborating with the Dewan Kerajinan Nasional Daerah of the DKI Jakarta Province, the exhibition pays tribute to stay-at-home mothers in apartment units (rumah susun) in several areas of Jakarta. With the aim to the empower as well as hone their skills for craftsmanship and business, the clothes and products were part of the efforts to train these stay-at-home women to be more independent and skillful.

Chitra Subyakto, Founder and Creative Director of Sejauh Mata Memandang admitted crafting her own batik motif called the Batik Semanggi in this latest collection. Inspired by the Semanggi Bridge that Jakartans are familiar with, where the bridge was built to connect the roads to different regions of Jakarta.

Traditional batik canting methods are applied to the cloth then dyed with bright palettes of green, red, yellow and navy blue. These batiks are then translated into products, which include scarves, multi-functional clothes and even the batik textiles, beautifully draped across the ceiling as part of the showcase. Other products offered in the collection include home products such as pillows, and daintily accented with colorful pom-poms, a custom in Betawi festive occasions.

The exhibition runs until May 13, 2017 at The Jakarta Creative Hub from 10am to 5pm, Gedung Graha Niaga Thamrin, Central Jakarta. Be sure to flip through our gallery for the event pictures.
