déj is the latest vegetarian café by pastry chef and owner of BEAU, Talita Setyadi, where hearty vegetarian meals and coffee grubs reside under one roof.

The vegetarian and sweet-toothed crowds have more reason to rejoice this year. Founded by the renowned Pastry Chef Talita Setyadi and owner of BEAU, déj is the latest creation of hers that brings forth the concept of “vegetarian café” where healthy salad bowls meet familiar coffee shop grubs under one roof. This café whose name derives from the French word déjeuner (means “lunch”) hones in on meatless dishes, salad and grain bowls, as well as pastries. With Jakarta’s booming healthy food scene, it is certainly one to look out for.

Right off the bat, the green glass entrance of déj gives way to a neat and grey monochromatic interior that is designed by Danny Wicaksono of Studio Dasar. déj is doing it canteen-style where selections of salads and grains are displayed behind the glass counter, teasing visitors’ eyes with their colourful display.

Diners can create their own bowls with a variety of seasonal salads and grains that are prepared in the kitchen daily. Therefore, all the items on the menu may not always be available, but one can rest assured that the selections on offer would make a satisfying assortment for a meal. If salads don’t keep one sated, déj also prides itself in serving meatless recreations of popular Western dishes. Take for example the Green Veggie Lasagna and the Rainbow Frittata where a medley of vegetables substitutes for the meat.

While you will find some of your favourite viennoiseries and pastries from BEAU in déj, the café is home to a selection of eggless and gluten-free cakes and muffins created by Talita herself. Therefore, one shouldn’t skip on trying their sweet indulgences such as the eggless Chocolate Mudcake or the Passionfruit Tea Cake. Whether as desserts or afternoon snacks, they’re good to have with a cup of coffee (supplied by Common Grounds). Don’t fancy coffee? Go for their all-natural fresh juices or range of flavoured kombucha instead.

With the arrival of déj, gaining access to healthy food has become a breeze in Jakarta.
