The Quiet Side of Kelapa Gading

Kelapa Gading found its softer and contemplative side with third-wave coffee shops like Retorika.

Kelapa Gading is known for its heavy traffic, humongous malls as well as a haven for foodies. Recently, it has also found a more quiet and contemplative side with the blossoming of third-wave coffee shops in the district. Lodged between ruko (shophouses), Retorika gives an impression of a claustrophobic-inducing establishment, but of course, that’s far from the truth.

While the street outside remains bustling, only the sound of patrons murmuring softly, the rumbling hum of coffee machine and clicking of coffee cups could be heard inside – all the buzz inside stirs you up to have more coffee and stay longer.

The modestly adorned establishment is straightforward and the same is also applied to its coffee as well. Expect to find the customary choices of coffee here as well as a few selection of tea for the non-coffee drinkers. Also, don’t expect to find any heavy meals on the menu as Retorika is keeping its focus on coffee. Still, there are pastries available for a quick nibble to stave off the hunger.

Patrons are likely to be drawn to its second storey. Here, a typical afternoon could be spent idling away at a sun-drenched corner by the window. Coffee in Retorika is definitely best enjoyed with the ample luxury of time.
