Green Door Kitchen

Located in Kelapa Gading, Green Door Kitchen specialises in Texas style barbecue executed with aplomb. Think tender tomahawk steak and juicy cheeseburger.

Who would think that Kelapa Gading would be one of the destinations in Jakarta to visit when it comes to getting a good serving of steak? Plus with the variety of affordable Chinese restaurants and street food in the area, it’s all the more unlikely to opt for western fare. Despite having all the odds stacked against them, Green Door Kitchen manages to rise above it.

This, of course, has everything to do with the founder and head chef Juan Januar Antono. Juan’s singular dedication is serving up quality meat is evident right at the moment you step into the establishment, where a dry ager machine greets you. This process of dry aging allows enzymes present in the meat to break down the muscle tissue, resulting in better texture and flavours before being cut into steaks.

Needless to say, there’s no need to crack your head as to what to order here. Since meat is their specialty, one of the highlights is definitely the establishment’s signature Tomahawk steak. Served unpretentiously on a wooden board, the generous portion is no doubt best shared with friends or family, unless you’re here with a ravenous appetite. Elsewhere, burger enthusiasts will find solace in their Bacon Cheese Burger, where it’s comprised of Wagyu beef patty, pork bacon and cheddar cheese sandwiched between brioche buns. And if you have room for more, don’t miss out on their Cuban sandwich, which is arguably the best you can find in Jakarta.

Juan’s take on Texas-style barbecue food is rooted on the fundamentals. That means being Instagrammable is not the key concern here, which is a good thing, as their delish food deserves your utmost attention. Plus, they don’t come cheap either. Their Tomahawk steak can cost more than two million rupiah, depending on the choice of meat. That’s why regulars often phone in beforehand to request for Juan to prepare them personally.

The presence of Green Door Kitchen is no doubt a welcome addition in the neighbourhood of Kelapa Gading. Nearby residents no longer need to travel far for quality western fare. Green Door Kitchen may be serious with their food but it’s complemented with a convivial atmosphere that warrants regular visits.
