On The Label is a series where we place the spotlight on various local fashion labels through a brief and digestible introduction. This time, we put the spotlight on the label that marries Indonesia's beauty and culture with contemporary womenswear, Toton.

Brought up by a seamstress mother, Toton Januar has immersed in the world of fashion since his young days. Investing in his passion for fashion design, he enrolled in New York’s prestigious Parsons New School of Design before launching his eponymous label, TOTON in 2012 with co-founder, Haryo Balitar.

Citing his home country’s diverse culture and natural beauty as inspiration, Toton regularly injects hints of Indonesia’s heritage into his ready-to-wear line in fresh, innovative ways. For instance, for his Spring-Summer 2016 collection, he used cord-like salmon pink materials to form the famous interlocking circles (a pattern often found in batik) on the skirt and paired them with pristine white kimono sleeve top.

It is with this combination of tradition and modernity that Toton continue to update his take on femininity, one collection at a time.

Toton makes his mark with regular showings at Jakarta and Paris Fashion Week as well as participating in Spotlight On: 2015’s Fashion Designers Vogue Italia. Doing Indonesian fashion proud, TOTON is among the new generation of local talents that successfully garner global attention to the beauty and allure of Indonesian heritage.
